The coat of arms is that of George Bowes (1701-1760), great-grandfather of John Bowes, co-founder of The Bowes Museum, and his first wife Eleanor Verney. The bowl was presented to the Bakers and Brewers Company, Newcastle by George Bowes in 1736.

1780 Coffee Pot

Of pear-shaped form, resting on a convex flared baluster foot with 'dashed' grooving, and a fitted scrolled wooden handle. It has a hinged lid with finial with further grooving surrounding a band of embossed flower ornament, and a tall spout with grooved ornament terminating in auricular-type scrolling. The main body is embossed with rich rococo flower ornament on each side in an asymmetrical cartouche, one of the flowers looking suspiciously like drooping sun-flower. On the other side similar ornament encloses a rococo cartouche engraved with the initials 'I (or J E� in script. The base (clearly inserted, as is apparent from inside) bears four hallmarks (WS/IM. 'O', lion passant, leopard's head and three castles) for William Stalker and John Michinson, Newcastle, 1780/1, as well as the scratched marks hh/n/n (?) and FLB (/)/B.

One of a pair of teaspoons, from the shallow bowl of each rises a tapering handle terminating in a spatulate end. The surface is decorated with "bright cut" engraving forming a panel at the top of each which is engraved with the initials IB (?).

The spoon has a deep slightly oval bowl set long-ways to the handle. The handle is of fiddle pattern form. The spoon is marked on reverse of the handle with the Newcastle hall marks for 1846. Maker's mark C.G. not traced.
